Enter Bolivia to catch flight with expired VISA

So I have a 1 year residency VISA which expires in November this year. February next year I will be taking a flight from La Paz to Buenos Aires, however I don't know whether I will actually be able to get in the country.

Does anyone know what would happen if I took a bus from Cusco and tried to cross the border? Or would a flight from Cusco to La Paz so that I was 'in-transit' in the airport be my only option?
