Need balsa wood and chonta in Santa Cruz

by Adam
(Santa Cruz)

I am living in Santa Cruz and would like to find some Balsa wood for making airplanes and Chonta for woodworking. Anyone know where I might find some? I have tried many Barracas and one owner finally said that he has never heard of Balsa and Chonta is only found in specialty shops. Maybe they may both be in the same place. Any ideas?

balsa and chonta wood for model airplanes in Bolivia
by: BoliviaBella

You might first try contacting the following airplane model-making clubs in Bolivia to see if they know where you can purchase what you need. There used to be a club in Santa Cruz too, but I'm not sure if it exists any more. One of the contacts below may know. I'm publishing information they've already published online on their sites:

Cámara Forestal. Almost all the "empresas forestales" (lumber companies) are members - they are the lumber "wholesalers". The barracas are smaller lumber sales points - the "retailers".

Here's their website: http://www.cfb.org.bo/CFBInicio/

Go to the far right tab at the top that says ESPECIES BOLIVIANAS and click on it. Where it says "Ficha Técnica" choose "balsa" from the drop down list. It gives you the scientific name and all info on balsa. It's listed as a Bolivian species so it must exist here.

Chonta is not on the list. But it's sometimes called the Chonta pambil.
