Hi! I'm an American living in Sucre, Bolivia and I wanted to get the word out that there is a new Tourism Center called "Casa de Turismo."
The Sucre section of the 2004 (5th Ed.) Lonely Planet is sorely outdated!! :( The unfortunate result is that lots of bewildered tourists are walking around confused because they can't find the stores listed. That's because they have relocated to the Casa de Turismo.
The street address is:
Calle Bustillos 131
Sucre, Bolivia
Website is:
http://casadeturismo.com.bo/
To get there, go to the Main Plaza in Sucre (called "Plaza 25 de Mayo"). Go to the corner with a "Tigo" cell phone store. Follow the street "Calle Argentina/Bustillos" for just 1 1/2 blocks, and it's on your right.
In the "Casa de Turismo", you can buy all kinds of Bolivian souvenirs, most of them handmade:
-paintings
-woven textiles
-jewelry (including Bolivianita)
-clothing
-scarves
-chocolate (from local favorite Para Ti!)
-local wines and traditional food, such as quinoa and amaranth
-silver items
-hand carved wooden items
You will also find travel agencies where you can book your adventures, a restaurant/bar, a drop-off laundry service, an Internet cafe, a copy shop, an ATM and a money exchange office (waaaay safer to do it here than on the street!)
Not lots of tourists know about this location yet, but hopefully Lonely Planet and other guidebooks will update their info soon!
Hope this helps someone--Enjoy your visit to Sucre!
